Kreato Architects was commissioned to design Himalayan Java Coffee’s 4,500 sq ft flagship on Durbarmarg, sited to face the Narayanhiti Durbar. The brief asked for a Third-Wave coffee experience while preserving visual primacy of the monument; our response was disciplined restraint. By keeping key furnishings below eye level, opening major sightlines and using transparent merchandising, we preserved uninterrupted views to the palace while drawing visitors into a layered sequence of café, roastery, merch zone, the country’s largest barista counter and a dedicated hand-brew bar.
With the renowned Nepalese coffee brand marking its 20th anniversary in 2021 A.D., Kreato Architects was commissioned to design the flagship outlet of Himalayan Java Coffee. The design concept was developed around the mesmerizing view of the Narayanhiti Palace, encouraging visitors to step inside and appreciate the historic monument. This idea anchors the overall spatial experience and sets a guiding framework for the brand identity to be carried forward in design of its future outlets.
Material and detail strategies reinforced that restraint: a muted matte palette is punctuated by warm mango and stained pine to reintroduce tactile, organic warmth without competing with the exterior context. Glass shelving and refined assembly systems create a sense of lightness and allow modular, workshop-based fabrication—reducing onsite complexity, improving quality control and simplifying future maintenance. Custom metal frames, brass-strutted tables, paper pendants and locally fabricated booth seating express craft and support Himalayan Java’s commitment to Nepali manufacture.
The project resolves programmatic density and cultural sensitivity through economy of form, careful sightline management and durable detailing. The result is a contemporary flagship that privileges experience over spectacle, sets a practical benchmark for café design in Nepal and aligns materially and operationally with the client’s local identity.
